Google Core Update 2026: Why You Lost Traffic and How to Recover

Online Marketing Author: Cristi Nefiru

In the first months of 2026, thousands of websites around the world reported sudden traffic drops. If you too have noticed that your visitor numbers fell for no obvious reason, you may have been affected by the Google Core Update of March 2026. At Altanet Craiova we believe it is important for you to understand exactly what happened and, above all, what you can do in practice to recover.

What is a Google Core Update?

Several times a year, Google updates its search algorithm – that is, the rules by which it decides which websites appear first in the results. These major updates are called Core Updates.

They don't target technical errors or penalties. Their purpose is to improve the overall quality of the results, promoting websites with useful, trustworthy content written by people with real expertise.

The March 2026 update, however, brought a change with an unusually large impact.

What did the 2026 Core Update specifically target?

This update precisely targeted a few categories of content:

  • AI-generated content without human oversight – automatically produced texts, without real expertise, without original data and without a distinct voice
  • Thin or generic content – articles that cover a topic superficially, without adding real value beyond what already exists on the internet
  • Content without demonstrated authority – websites that write about medical, financial or legal topics without authors with verifiable expertise

Google's message is clear: it doesn't matter how the content was produced, but how useful and trustworthy it is for the user.

How many were affected?

The data published after the 2026 Core Update shows the scale of the impact:

There is good news too: websites with real authors, original data and demonstrated expertise saw traffic increases after the same update. Google doesn't punish – it rewards quality.

How do you know if you were affected?

Clear signs that your website was hit by the Core Update:

  • A sudden drop in organic traffic starting in March 2026, with no recent technical changes on the site
  • Weaker positions in Google Search Console for keywords you previously held
  • The most affected pages are those with short, generic articles or ones produced exclusively with AI

What can you do in practice to recover?

Google itself offers a list of questions for self-assessing content quality. Translated into practical steps:

  • Consolidate thin pages. Instead of 10 short articles on the same topic, create a single complete, high-quality article – so-called “pillar content”.
  • Add visible human expertise. Articles should have real authors, with a bio and demonstrated experience. Google checks who wrote it, not just what was written.
  • Strengthen your E-E-A-T signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness). Get links from reputable websites in your field. Brand mentions count as much as classic backlinks.
  • Review your AI content. If you have published automatically generated texts, run them through the filter of a human expert – add real data, concrete examples and an original perspective.

What comes next?

According to Results Repeat, the direction is clear: AI content without human oversight will be penalised ever more aggressively. “Content is King” becomes “Trust is King” – trust in the source matters more than the volume of content.

Recovery after a Core Update is not immediate – it can take a few months. But websites that invest in real quality have every chance of coming back and growing.
